Holiday Mood

Went on a holiday to Desaru with listeners over a weekend. Though it was a short getaway, but was packed with lots of fun! Here are some of my favourite moments…

flagoff

Too early for a Saturday, but Elliott, Kev and I were surprisingly full of energy.

car

Trying to keep awake during our sleepy car ride.

resort mah

For good stuffs and bad, we adopted the “resort mah!” attitude.

act cool

I can’t stop laughing when Kev showed me this photo, while humming
关于你好的坏的,都已经听说… …

the white gang

Proud of our refreshing white Jia t-shirts. Swee!

on stage

As much as we entertained the guests (I hope we did),
the three of us entertained ourselves very much on stage.

water cuties

Despite the tight schedule, we swam day and night.

boys day race

Check out the boys! They had a day race “walking in the pool”.
Wah, looking competitive sia.

hosts

The mad Desaru trio.

group shot

The-everybody-shot.

lanterns craze

Having fun with our lanterns at the very hot campfire.

my deng long

I heart my Dang lantern!

boys night race

The siao gias didn’t work out enough in the day, they decided to go for
a night race with two new additions – Harry and Jensen!

Aiyo, Kev’s so man…

replica

We are the poster models.

We braved through the cars and gates last Wednesday. Finally we got there. It was around 10.30pm and we were HUNGRY!!

JB, here we come again!
We gorged. Our all-time favourites: crayfish with cereal, sambal stingray,
oyster omelette, char kway teow, herbal chicken & baby squids.
The “free gift” dessert, coconut almond jelly was delicious and refreshing~

The satisfied us, thinking about of our next makan session. Hee…

Last Sunday, I woke up early reluctantly to accompany my Mummy for some activity that she has signed up for. But to my pleasant surprise, it was a refreshing trip, where we inch closer to the beautiful nature.

First stop, we went to a vegetables farm and being a veggie lover, I was so excited to see my favourite 苦瓜、奶白、菠菜 and many others freshly dancing in the air or blooming from the ground!

Me and my lovely 奶白, Mummy and her favourite soup ingredient 老黄瓜.
And check out this huge 白冬瓜!

Mummy just can’t get her hands off the fresh and juicy-looking 老黄瓜.

At first I thought the one on the left is bittergourd, until I saw
the real ones (on the right).
Didn’t managed to find out what’s the other veggie. I need a tour guide!!

Eh I thought it was a veggie farm, but there were flowers everywhere too.
And Mummy got all excited!!

My first experience in a vegetables farm.

They live in the cozy farm happily ever after. Aww, so sweeeeeet!

I eat this, drink this and put this on my face. Good for skin!

Next stop, we went to a pottery factory.

*Wah* I was quite shocked to see such a big “皮蛋缸”.

Beautifully crafted traditional Chinese tableware.

The final stop was a wheat grass (小麦草) farm, and there was this small supermarket where we bought some interesting foodies like wheat grass herbal jelly (小麦草龟苓膏), fresh black fungus, mushroom noodles and cactus.

Yes I really mean cactus, for cooking or boiling soup. Next day, Mummy cooked the cactus with eggs, and it tastes like crunchy and… sour?! Apparently, eating cactus can help to prevent cancer. In Mexico, the people consume cactus regularly, and Mexico has the lowest number of cancer cases in the world.

(Clockwise) 小麦草、黄金菇、发财菇、黑木耳.

We went home happily smelling fresh like vegetables, flowers and wheat grass. :)

It was a normal Wednesday, but we decided like a week ago that we were going to have FUN even on a weekday night. And so, Seb drove us in his stylo sports car to JB where we gorged, gossiped and WOWed at the less expensive entertainment in JB! The 4 ladies & a man can really eat… Here are the list of finger licking good food we ate at the famous 大马花园:

Fried crayfish with cereal (MUST eat!)
Sambal kangkong
Baby kai lan
Sambal stingray
Herbal chicken (yummy…)
Crispy baby sotong
Handmade chee cheong fun (very traditional)
Oyster omelette
Char kway teow
Sugarcane juice (check out the SUPER big mug!)

A hearty meal @JB with Kay, YY, Nana & Seb!

Then, Seb brought us to this area where there are some good chill-out pubs and there’s even a Harley Davidson theme pub… It’s where Regency Hotel is, a short drive from the customs. We were too full to move our butts, so we just found a comfy pub, sat down and chilled with some drinks.

Chill @JB till late night…

It was so much FUN (and good foooooood) that we are planning our next trip to JB already. Hehe~

It was a wonderful trip, well taken care of by the men. On 16 Jun, we set off to Xiamen and from there we took a 3-hr plus bus ride to Fuzhou to attend the Straits Youth Forum. This Forum aimed to provide a platform for young people who are involved or interested in entrepreneurship to interact and exchange their creative ideas. Well, I was the only privileged lady in the Singapore team and the men took great care of me.

While waiting to set off. Hmm~ but I think this was not the plane I took.

From Xiamen airport to Fuzhou, on the way we took a lunch break at Jinjiang in a very Chinese restaurant. The food was… hmm… quite exotic? Eh, anyway Gurchran stuck to his KFC, while Sam and Quan Tee hardly ate the food. I thought the food was OK.

Oyster cakes. Not bad.

Oyster omelette with lots of fresh juicy oysters.
In Singapore, it’s more like omelette “garnished” with few pathetic oysters.

Finally after more than 7 hours of travelling, we arrived at the hotel!

Somehow, “My Youth Friends” sounds abit awkward. Heh~

Pampered by the comfy hotel room. I enjoyed the stay alone… Envious?

Knowing that next morning our schedule is packed with ceremonies and seminars, so of course we must not waste time and enjoy the night life first!

The night shopping in Fuzhou is… b-o-r-i-n-g.
1st-timer-in-China, Junwei (in shirt) & shopaholic me were disappointed.

Never mind, we found a better way to spend the night. KARAOKE!! This A-go-go ktv place has many spacious rooms and good service.

A night of singing and drinking.
Check out the 2 singers – Sam & Gurchran. Look so pro!

The next day, we woke up early in the morning for the opening ceremony of the Forum. Presenting to you, the men in suit. *drum roll* Ta da~

S.N.A.G. Interested in any of them? Hmm…
But some are taken already. So got to check with me first. Haha!

Rose among the torns. Heh…

The ceremony and seminars that followed were not exactly very exciting, but luckily the conversations between me and my “partner” Zhou Fang were entertaining.

Boliao partners trying to time every speaker who supposedly only had
10 minutes for each of their speeches.

Hmm… I wonder how you guys kept yourselves “entertained”
throughout the long ceremony.

During the break, as usual I kept myself busy with “choreographing” photo-taking sessions. I met “my match” – Mr. Gan who insisted that we should take a photo up on the stage with the backdrop. But the funny thing was, while we were on stage, the emcee was making announcement that participants should be back at their seats as the next part of the ceremony will begin shortly. Haha, so that’s why we have awkward smiles on our faces in this photo:

Up on stage shall be.

At night, we attended the closing ceremony banquet where lots of goodies were served. Why no pictures? I paiseh lah, so many guests and big shots around, cannot xia suey and take pictures of food like a sua gu.

Exchange of souvenirs. Exchange of cultures.

The usual group photo after dinner.

Next day, we bid Fuzhou goodbye and set off to Quanzhou.

I was the photographer.

We had meals after meals, red wines and more red wines with the local officials. Gosh I felt like a pig man! But, luckily we did quite a lot of walking too. First, it was the China Museum for Fujian-Taiwan Kinship.

Trying very hard to keep our eyes open under the glaring sun.

Guess how this artwork at the entrance of the museum was created?
Painting? Sculpture?

This intelligent piece of artwork was created using explosives.
It’s a “gunpowder painting” done by artist Cai Guoqiang.

I liked what was written on the small prints:
同文. 同种. 同根生.

Can you find your Chinese surname here?

Then, we visited the famous temple in Quanzhou – Kai Yuan Si (开元寺). I didn’t realised that it was my second visit here until after dinner that night. Blur me… But I was not alone, Xiang Lin went on the same tour as me in the year 2004, visited this temple and was clueless at first too. Haha, birds of the (blur) feathers flock together.

The East tower (东塔) of Kai Yuan Si.

And the West tower (西塔).

P.e.a.c.e.

The last night, we finally had a decent shopping spree in Quanzhou. There are many exciting shops outside the Quanzhou Hotel that we stayed in. I felt like a princess where tea was served while I was shopping, and the men gave me comments and even paid for my dress & shoes (Thanks Xiang Lin & Junwei)! So shiok, haha… Of course, not forgetting the forever “entertainer”, Quan Tee who never fails to make me laugh like mad with his crazy jokes and super good “acting skills”. And, the two “老大s” – Siew Kai & James really took very good care of us throughout the trip.

Goodbye, till we meet again… …

Heading home sweet home. Eh, this is also not the plane I took.

2Jun 2008 – Last day of our 吃东西, 买东西 HK trip, got to catch up on food we craved for but hadn’t ate and things we saw, liked but hadn’t bought.

Finally, my HK 鸳鸯 & 牛腩面 *satisfied*.

Diana and her HK 奶茶 & 鱼蛋河粉.

The variety of food here at 翠华茶餐厅 is pretty good.

“Private room”, cool~

For the last time, we swept through 新之城 & 旺角中心 again, yes again and again… We made another wonderful discovery of two shops, which sell accessories that cost only HKD$20 per piece, and there are lots of variety and of good quality. I like the bling bling ones, which are usually very overpriced in Singapore. Gosh I’m gona miss HK!!

Before we left, one more must-eat:

Char siew rice from 大家乐 (a restaurant franchise in HK)
The char siew aka roast pork in HK is really tender and delicious!

Diana is such a gem to have bought cakes from the 美心西饼店 to pre celebrate my birthday. Though the cakes got quite “disfigured” by the time we got onto the plane, but they still taste good.

Birthday celebration on plane. Thanks Dar!

1Jun 2008 – Though it was only 6 months ago that I visited Macau, it’s a place so unforgettable that I wanted so much to re-visit it.

Diana and I woke up early in the morning and chiong to the ferry terminal hoping to catch the 1pm ferry. We managed to buy the tickets and even the return tickets at 7.30pm, then we practically sprint towards the ferry, only to find out that we didn’t bring our passports!! If I could take a picture of our SHOCKED expressions when we saw the immigration counters, that will be so 经典…

Bo bianz we 硬着头皮 to ask for later tickets, luckily although the lady had a “black face” but was willing to help us *phew*! Next challenge: chiong home (ahem, btw we lived in-between 新界 & 九龙) to grab our passports and chiong back to the terminal to catch the 3pm ferry. In the end, we missed the 3pm ferry, still we ngei si hopped on to the one at 3.30pm. Finally, after much struggles, Macau 我们来啦!

千辛万苦, 最终还是一起来到了富有建筑特色的澳门.

I simply love the architecture of the buildings in Macau.

议事亭前地 Senado Square

The quiet lane gives you a peace of mind…

Hungry Diana was hunting for food in Macau, after a hectic journey. Of course, the 招牌猪扒包 cannot be miseed!

A set meal consists of a juicy 猪扒包 &
yummalicious 珍珠奶茶 costs HKD$25.

And 葡式蛋挞 for ME!

Nice. But still miss the egg white tart I had at Lisboa restaurant in Shanghai.

The must-visit in Macau (is not casino hor, at least not for me) is the Ruins of St. Pauls.

大三巴牌坊

Glad that I’m here again.

The residential buildings in Macau.

Love, Macau.

Macau, see you again!

31May 2008 – I had 鱼蛋粉 for breakfast. The fishballs in HK taste different from those in Singapore, they are more Q, but both types are yummy in their own way.

Fishballs bee hoon 鱼蛋粉 in HK.

For the first time in my life, I went to Lantau Island 大屿山. It was a long, long journey before we reached 东涌 to take bus 23 and it took about 45 minutes before we finally arrived at 大屿山.

Us on our MTR ride in HK. Lalalala~

Breath-taking scene up on Lantau Island at 宝莲寺.

The Big Buddha 大佛.

I always see this scene in HK drama serials, finally I saw it with my own eyes, the feeling is like… So touching. Though it was drizzling, but we have to climb up more than 200 steps to reach the top so as to call this trip complete. Over 200 steps mean nothing to Diana, she jogs regularly. But for me, haiz… I was like panting and perspiring by the time I reached the top. When I saw this scene, I thought all my efforts were worth it.

This is peaceful…

Yes I was exhausted from climbing up more than 200 steps.

Somehow, I like these trees.

Then, we took an internal bus to the fishing village at the western side of Lantau Island, Tai O 大澳. Check out the beautiful scenery here.

Embrace the nature in Tai O.

Very windy~

Appreciating Tai O’s beauty with a happy mood. :)

The people in Tai O leads a simple life in this fishing village.

Before we left Tai O, Diana bought some bananas from the market. We were astonished at the size of these huge bananas!

Bigger nanas for more fibre. Muahahaha!!!

At night we went to 香港工业中心 located near 荔枝角 MTR station. Tina & Martin recommended this shopping place to us. At first we thought we got sabotaged because it looks like an industrial building, but no, it’s really a wholesale centre that also does retail business and it’s a really enormous place, which I think we will need about three days to really conquer it. But, we still like 新之城 because we preferred the variety there and most things are still cheaper.

We then had dinner at 海王餐厅, the ba zang – 黄豆咸蛋肉粽 here is really good…

Pumpkin porridge + rice dumpling + fried noodles @海王.

Our friend Sharon came to HK to work since March, so this time round the three of us actually gathered in HK, so cool…

Diana bought for Sharon this birthday present from Thailand.
Sweet.

Sharon brought us to a cozy drinking place called Sevva.

If you plan to enjoy the beautiful night scenery at the alfresco area of Sevva, please bring along a jacket because it’s really windy up here.

Sevva located in 太子大厦 near 中环 (Central) MTR station.

Up close & personal with my favourite building in HK
(the one on the left).

Together with our Singaporean friend, Audrey.

Not high on drinks, but got high on the captivating night scenery.

30May 2008 – My fever and stomach upset got very bad in the middle of the night. I practically finished the whole packet of Panadol and bao ji wan. Gosh, the feeling was terrible. Couldn’t get to sleep, so I decided to find my camera and captured this shot:

My sweetest da dang, Jiayi wrote this in his room. I was SO TOUCHED!

I felt better in the morning, but felt abit asthmatic. Haiz I concluded that just like set meals in HK, illness come in a package too DUH. So I decided to stay home and take a rest, while Diana went on with her shopping spree. We then met up in the evening for dinner with my HK friends. Here, check out my “breakfast set”.

Luckily the chok (porridge) is yummy…

Despite my stomach upset (though I felt much better at night after a day’s rest), I couldn’t resist the food in HK! And my dear HK friends, they never failed to order the BEST dishes *slurp*.

(top) 空心菜, 沙律龙虾卷,
(centre) 豆腐煲, 南瓜香芋煲, 烧鹅腿烧肉双拼,
(bottom) 炸生蚝 & 雪蛤椰奶豆腐.

Are you drooling already? I love the claypot pumpkin with yam and the roast pork! Weeee~ Shiok. Of course, I must thank these sweeties for their good recommendations and dinner treat.

With Tina & husband.
Tina, I’m glad you’re excited about the lime I brought from Singapore!
(Yes, you can’t find lime in HK.)

The happy couple who will be getting married next year – Martin & Angel.

After a hearty meal… You see satisfied faces in a crowded restaurant.
See you guys in Singapore!

And after dinner, Diana and I continued our “shopping mission”. Remember the malls at Mongkok I mentioned in my last blog entry? There we go again…

Our favourite shopping malls – 新之城 & 旺角中心

Out of 6 days in HK, Diana was here for 4 times
and myself for 3 times. Haha!

29May 2008 – You can get to eat McDonalds at cheaper prices in HK, such as a set meal ranges from HKD$17-25, so it’s about S$3.40-5. Cheap and good! I like to eat the pork/chicken chop macaroni 妞妞粉 breakfast set here. YUMMY! Must also try the grilled chicken burger, its peppery taste is Grrrrreat…

A good breakfast to kickstart
a brand new day of more eating & shopping in HK!

Being a crazy 古惑仔 (movie “Young & Dangerous”) fan, I always hope that there are many cool and suave 古惑仔s walking along the streets in HK, especially in 铜锣湾 Causeway Bay. But sad to say, I never get to bump into 陈浩南 or 山鸡… Sigh~

My “beloved” 铜锣湾. 古惑仔, where are you??!!

Still, I had a pleasant surprise at 铜锣湾 MTR station. I saw this vending machine that sells novels of my favourite author 张小娴. So cool…

A vending machine in Causeway Bay MTR station that sells
novels of my favourite author.

Bustling Causeway Bay at Times Square.

It’s time to fill our stomachs again! But unfortunately, I was feeling quite unwell due to my “monthly affair” and was feverish. Worse still, I was having a bad stomach upset. Shat! I used my 意志力 and moved on with our 买东西,吃东西 trip. So, 茶餐厅 here we come again…

Diana and her fat juicy 水饺 (prawn dumplings). Hmm~

My must-eat combination in HK:
餐肉煎蛋叮面 & 柑咭蜜.

How can I miss the fresh hot soft 菠萝油?!

Another thing that never fails to amaze me in Hong Kong, it’s their written Cantonese. Guess what this means:

3rd line from the top: Chao Gui Diu
(means Cha Kuey Tiao). Hahahaa!!

This day though the weather is not fantastic, it was drizzling since morning, but we decided that there was no time to lose, so we proceeded to 山顶 (The Peak). Before that, we took a rest at this park we passed by as we were tired from walking and I was really feeling quite unwell. While catching my breath, I captured these beautiful shots of HK high rise buildings in the daytime:

Modern HK in the day.

The funny thing is that next day we found out from the TV news it was The Peak’s 120th year anniversary and each ticket was sold at HKD 30 cents only (as of the price 120 years ago), though we missed the cheap tickets and special occasion, but lucky thing we avoided the crazy crowd, there was 6000 over people queuing in the rain since early morning!

Like 9 years ago, we are going to The Peak together. :)

You won’t believe the sight of The Peak that day… I couldn’t believe it too. Ahhhh!!!~

Foggy Peak. 朦胧不一定就美丽, 唉… 天啊!

For your information, since last September, if you want to go up to the highest viewing gallery called Sky Terrace, you have to pay for a ticket that costs HKD$20. Since there’s no view and only fog, I decided to self entertain by talking and thinking crap, suddenly I caught this hilarious sight of two couples (who don’t know each other at all) that were so matching in colours… Like what this friend in HK Audrey said, the UNO couples. Hahahaa~

The UNO couples.

You can also check out the Madam Tussaud Wax Museum. Due to time constraint, we didn’t go but managed to see a few exhibits outside the museum. Jacky Cheung looks very alike, but Bruce Lee is bad… looks more like his 替身. DUH.

非常成龙 VS. 冒牌李小龙.

At night we went to the Star Ferry Terminal 天星码头, and we both agreed that HK’s night scenery is really mesmerising.

We love HK!

Try to catch the Laser Show everyday at 8pm, you’ll get to see a different beauty of the Star Ferry Terminal.

夜晚的美丽尽在天星码头… …
