June 2008

10 years ago, this boy and this girl became classmates, joined the same ECA (now known as CCA) and played the roles as a couple in a drama, which sparked off their love chemistry. 1 year later, they got together as they countdown to a new year. All these years, they went through thick and thin, happy and sad moments. If you never believed in fairy tales, let me show you this one true story…

Like a fairy tale, Ling & Yang tied the knot after 9 years of dating
on 21 June 2008.

The beautiful bride enjoying her most memorable moments…

Forever young-looking auntie & uncle marrying off their only gem.
Aw~ so touching!!

The sisters showing off our pretty wrist corsages handmade by Ling.

Hui & I, excited in our white dresses.

Wah yummy wasabi with wang wang biscuits!!!
Of course, we must feed the brothers with good food heh…

Trying to act tough…

Whatever! We got the last laugh, hehehe~

Finally, we combined powers. Presenting to you *drum roll*…
Ling & Yang’s wedding entourage!

The magical touch *bliss*.

*At Yang’s house* Eh… how come somehow this photo looks funny??
(Ying: Hey Fang Jun, relax… This is not some family portrait.)

Their suite @ Novotel Clarke Quay romantically decorated.

We made ourselves comfortable in the suite. Woosh!

Our different looks day & night. Amazingly, our smiles remained “frozen”.

Penning down our best wishes for our dearest friends, the sweetest couple.

Wedding is a happy occasion where old friends gather.

Three minutes before the couple marched into the ballroom *gan jiong*.

A toast to your everlasting love & our 10 years of friendship!

Another June baby, but she’s no Gemini. She’s a true bloom Cancerian. The most unforgettable classic encounter with this “crab” (crap) went like this…

*At Stirling Road famous prawn mee stall (now closed down already after the chef uncle passed away)*
Kay: Should I eat $2 or $3?
Ying: Up to you lor (knowing that my advice is USELESS to the crab)
Kay: $2 lah, I want to 减肥. But I drove all the way here, should eat $3 right?
Ying: … …
*silence*
Ying: You want to 减肥 then eat $2 lah.
Kay: Never mind lah, I eat $3. Come all the way here liao.
Ying: Ok lor… (I knew it! Indecisive cancerian~)
Uncle: (to Kay) 小妹多少的?
Kay: Er… 两块($2)的!
Ying: (kaoz…)

Well, that’s her. My “crabby” (crappy) June buddy. It’s time of the year again, where we go merry drinking!

Wah rare guest! Char babe & us @ winebar on Kay’s B-day celebration!

Was blue the theme of the night? Why wasn’t I informed…

Char & Kay were sick on my B-day, and Youyi was down with a bad flu on Kay’s B-day. Youyi sms-ed me saying that hopefully I won’t fall sick on her B-day. 呸, 呸, 呸!! 坏的不灵, 好的灵! Though missing Youyi, we had quite abit of fun crapping and drinking. Of course, as usual the 主角 is… Ta da!

Kay named this occasion as The LIM JIU Nite! Yum Seng~

This Cancerian is a manipulator too. She got friends around to drink
her “favourite drink” – LIT…

I got my share too! My belated B-day pressies from my jie mei-s.

The bag is gorgeous, Kay. And the tops fit perfectly, Char. Thanks girls!

It was a wonderful trip, well taken care of by the men. On 16 Jun, we set off to Xiamen and from there we took a 3-hr plus bus ride to Fuzhou to attend the Straits Youth Forum. This Forum aimed to provide a platform for young people who are involved or interested in entrepreneurship to interact and exchange their creative ideas. Well, I was the only privileged lady in the Singapore team and the men took great care of me.

While waiting to set off. Hmm~ but I think this was not the plane I took.

From Xiamen airport to Fuzhou, on the way we took a lunch break at Jinjiang in a very Chinese restaurant. The food was… hmm… quite exotic? Eh, anyway Gurchran stuck to his KFC, while Sam and Quan Tee hardly ate the food. I thought the food was OK.

Oyster cakes. Not bad.

Oyster omelette with lots of fresh juicy oysters.
In Singapore, it’s more like omelette “garnished” with few pathetic oysters.

Finally after more than 7 hours of travelling, we arrived at the hotel!

Somehow, “My Youth Friends” sounds abit awkward. Heh~

Pampered by the comfy hotel room. I enjoyed the stay alone… Envious?

Knowing that next morning our schedule is packed with ceremonies and seminars, so of course we must not waste time and enjoy the night life first!

The night shopping in Fuzhou is… b-o-r-i-n-g.
1st-timer-in-China, Junwei (in shirt) & shopaholic me were disappointed.

Never mind, we found a better way to spend the night. KARAOKE!! This A-go-go ktv place has many spacious rooms and good service.

A night of singing and drinking.
Check out the 2 singers – Sam & Gurchran. Look so pro!

The next day, we woke up early in the morning for the opening ceremony of the Forum. Presenting to you, the men in suit. *drum roll* Ta da~

S.N.A.G. Interested in any of them? Hmm…
But some are taken already. So got to check with me first. Haha!

Rose among the torns. Heh…

The ceremony and seminars that followed were not exactly very exciting, but luckily the conversations between me and my “partner” Zhou Fang were entertaining.

Boliao partners trying to time every speaker who supposedly only had
10 minutes for each of their speeches.

Hmm… I wonder how you guys kept yourselves “entertained”
throughout the long ceremony.

During the break, as usual I kept myself busy with “choreographing” photo-taking sessions. I met “my match” – Mr. Gan who insisted that we should take a photo up on the stage with the backdrop. But the funny thing was, while we were on stage, the emcee was making announcement that participants should be back at their seats as the next part of the ceremony will begin shortly. Haha, so that’s why we have awkward smiles on our faces in this photo:

Up on stage shall be.

At night, we attended the closing ceremony banquet where lots of goodies were served. Why no pictures? I paiseh lah, so many guests and big shots around, cannot xia suey and take pictures of food like a sua gu.

Exchange of souvenirs. Exchange of cultures.

The usual group photo after dinner.

Next day, we bid Fuzhou goodbye and set off to Quanzhou.

I was the photographer.

We had meals after meals, red wines and more red wines with the local officials. Gosh I felt like a pig man! But, luckily we did quite a lot of walking too. First, it was the China Museum for Fujian-Taiwan Kinship.

Trying very hard to keep our eyes open under the glaring sun.

Guess how this artwork at the entrance of the museum was created?
Painting? Sculpture?

This intelligent piece of artwork was created using explosives.
It’s a “gunpowder painting” done by artist Cai Guoqiang.

I liked what was written on the small prints:
同文. 同种. 同根生.

Can you find your Chinese surname here?

Then, we visited the famous temple in Quanzhou – Kai Yuan Si (开元寺). I didn’t realised that it was my second visit here until after dinner that night. Blur me… But I was not alone, Xiang Lin went on the same tour as me in the year 2004, visited this temple and was clueless at first too. Haha, birds of the (blur) feathers flock together.

The East tower (东塔) of Kai Yuan Si.

And the West tower (西塔).

P.e.a.c.e.

The last night, we finally had a decent shopping spree in Quanzhou. There are many exciting shops outside the Quanzhou Hotel that we stayed in. I felt like a princess where tea was served while I was shopping, and the men gave me comments and even paid for my dress & shoes (Thanks Xiang Lin & Junwei)! So shiok, haha… Of course, not forgetting the forever “entertainer”, Quan Tee who never fails to make me laugh like mad with his crazy jokes and super good “acting skills”. And, the two “老大s” – Siew Kai & James really took very good care of us throughout the trip.

Goodbye, till we meet again… …

Heading home sweet home. Eh, this is also not the plane I took.

On the 15 Jun Sunday, I participated in the Singapore Hui Ann Association Family Day 2008 event with my parents. Though I was reluctant to get out of bed early in the morning, but quite excited about my first visit to the new gardening hub located near Alexandra Road – HortPark.

It felt really good to be close to nature, watching the greenery and variety of plants.

Life can be colourful, if you learn to appreciate the beauty around you.

Flowers of different colours growing on the same tree.

White flowers with red bananas. Good match!

Time to work out! We started our healthy walk across this bridge that leads to Telok Blangah Hill Park and head towards the 1600 metres long elevated Alexandra Arch pedestrian walkway, longest in Singapore!

Had fun working out with family & friends.

Walk, walk, and walk some more.
Wah~ this elevated walkway is really long…
If you observe closely, this is an intelligent architecture.

Afraid you get lost?
No worries, the organising committee had planned well.
Just follow the red balloons!

Along the way, I came across this very old tree. I thought it was captivating…

Ageing gracefully… …

Finally Mummy and I crossed the 80 metres long Alexandra Arch that connects the elevated pedestrian walkway and HortPark.

Glowing in RED! (Dad *panting* after the long walk)

There are many facilities in this new gardening hub – HortPark, such as the HortCentre with a Fruit Room, Flower Room and many more. There is also a Hands-On House with an Activity Area and Kids Green Corner. The HortGardens consists of 20 theme gardens, this one I like best:

Colourful windmills with the greens.

No where to go. Check out the HortPark and embrace the nature!

Always aiming to be a tai tai, so there we go for our yum cha sessions! First it was with Stella, Liping & our mother-to-be Grace.

Grace at her first pregnancy. More to come, I believe. :)

Then I met Diana, Liping & Zimin with her cutsey 大头文!

Cheeky Guanwen. I caught his smug look when mummy Zimin
gave in to his cries & carried him.

June is a month full of celebrations. Yesterday it was Adeline’s birthday and we had a good dinner at Margarita’s @Dempsey Hill.

Secondary school pals and new add-ins.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY ADE!

This is my third birthday cake, and it’s my favourite Doraemon!!!

OMGosh! Ding Dang smiling at me: Eat me! Eat me!

My sister and Steven bought this from Polar cakes and gave me a big surprise at the clubhouse last Saturday. No wonder my sister was shocked to see me in blue. So Ding Dang. Hehe~

Doraemon: Are you trying to imitate me by wearing blue?
Ying: No. I’m just gona cut you up.

We are the Dang lovers! But hey, who’s birthday is this man?

More surprises for me when these lovely folks came with birthday pressies…

Peng Yew & Ping Ping bought me a romance novel:
Chicken Soup in Chinese version. I like!

Joanne & Leonard gave me a charmed necklace. So beautiful~

It was not easy putting on this necklace because we had a hard time trying to remove a tag attached to it. Worse still, there was this “trying to be helpful” person who came along and offered to help using his teeth, BUT the necklace broke instead. And GOSH, he better do something about it. Yes he did, but I don’t understand why he had to mend the necklace s-q-u-a-t-t-i-n-g.

*scared stiff*
Better fix this, if not I’ll get fixed.
(-_-)”’

When I got home and read this card, then I realised I forgot to take a picture with Leonard. Paiseh~

Aw~ So sweet!!

Next day, I got my belated birthday pressies from Stella, Kahyee, Tomney & Zhong. My bestie knows me best! She got the M.A.C. stuffs that I like!

Not young anymore, but still can act sweet.

M.A.C. pressed powder, eyeliner, lip glosses & fake eyelashes.
Don’t need to buy cosmetics for time being liao.

Next, presenting my fourth birthday cake…

Yummy banana & walnut cake baked by Steven!

I’m always serious when it comes to making birthday wishes.

My happy family.

Best demonstration of identicals. Hahahaa~

One of the many pressies from sister & Steven. So sweet hor?

Hmm… Will I have a fifth birthday cake?

You get to celebrate your birthday every year, so it’s actually nothing really special about it. But I think it’s when this day, you receive well wishes, kind words, thoughtful presents and even happy surprises that makes your birthday meaningful and truly memorable.

My mum was really sweet… She bought me my
favourite traditional cakes and gave me a big surprise!

Ta da! Another surprise from Jean. Yummy Canele cake
appeared right after dinner.

1 year older. 1 year wiser.

Love the “gemini devils” handphone pouch. And I got a
“dessert buffet with Jean voucher”! Creative.

Pressie from Sylvia & Travis. WOW I like the cutie wrapping!

La & me. 17 years of friendship and many more to go…

Finally! My jiemei sashay into the winebar with my birthday present
air-flown from Taiwan!

百合花琉璃吊坠. Youyi: 百合象征纯洁美丽. Liping: Hm… 不适合你.
Me: Thanks hor.

A cool combination of my primary school friend, JC friend,
ex-ex-colleague and ex-colleague. Woo~

My Cindy baby.
Hm… why dint someone tell me that my hair was in a mess?

Rare clubber, Liping. Cheers pal!

Gosh we grew up and growing old together…

My men for 13 years and more.

姐妹永远的生日愿望:青春美丽. Missing Kay and Char…

Check out the drinks! Nothing compared to last year. Ha~

Sorry folks, this handsome is taken.
My dear 小弟
Ian and his cutie girlfriend.

When you’re young, this is called the ah beng game.
When you aged, this is called the ah pek game.

My SIM coursemate Dennes aka “放空”.
Hey 放空, I like the bag you got for me. It’s beautiful!

Woa, kisses from my girls! *bliss*

Finally, Travis boy is here. The 3 musketeers reunite!

2am plus. Me and Julian on his maiden trip to Zouk.

Birthdays will never be special without loved ones. Sweeties, thanks for making my day memorable. :)

My mummy and sister always poke fun at me saying that I spend A MONTH to celebrate my birthday every year. That’s not true! Just that it’s not easy to gather everyone for a meal, so sometimes I’ll have to meet up different groups of friends on different days to celebrate my birthday.

This year I had my first birthday treat one day before my birthday. The food was finger licking good!

Coffee pork ribs (Rating: ***)

My love: chicken wings! (Rating: *****)

Yam paste with gingko nuts (Rating: ***) – too sweet.

Chendol (Rating: ****)

Only when I got home I realised I forgot to take a picture with this sweet friend who gave me my first birthday treat. Oops!

2Jun 2008 – Last day of our 吃东西, 买东西 HK trip, got to catch up on food we craved for but hadn’t ate and things we saw, liked but hadn’t bought.

Finally, my HK 鸳鸯 & 牛腩面 *satisfied*.

Diana and her HK 奶茶 & 鱼蛋河粉.

The variety of food here at 翠华茶餐厅 is pretty good.

“Private room”, cool~

For the last time, we swept through 新之城 & 旺角中心 again, yes again and again… We made another wonderful discovery of two shops, which sell accessories that cost only HKD$20 per piece, and there are lots of variety and of good quality. I like the bling bling ones, which are usually very overpriced in Singapore. Gosh I’m gona miss HK!!

Before we left, one more must-eat:

Char siew rice from 大家乐 (a restaurant franchise in HK)
The char siew aka roast pork in HK is really tender and delicious!

Diana is such a gem to have bought cakes from the 美心西饼店 to pre celebrate my birthday. Though the cakes got quite “disfigured” by the time we got onto the plane, but they still taste good.

Birthday celebration on plane. Thanks Dar!
